KLM House No. 6 is associated with two different historic buildings in publications about the collection: Het Houten Huys at the Begijnhof 34 in Amsterdam and the former Sint Petrus House in Middelburg. It has not been established with complete certainty which building originally inspired the miniature.
KLM House No. 6 is a Delft Blue miniature whose exact origin remains a matter of discussion. Publications about the KLM houses identify two different historic buildings as the possible model for its design.
Het Houten Huys in Amsterdam
Several publications associate KLM House No. 6 with Het Houten Huys at Begijnhof 34 in Amsterdam. This remarkable wooden house dates from the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century and is one of the oldest surviving residential buildings in Amsterdam.
The story goes that there are only 2 wooden houses left in Amsterdam: Zeedijk 1 (built around 1560) and Begijnhof 34 (built between 1475 and 1530). In fact, in the second case, only the frame structure and a rare, flat, triangular facade are made of wood. Research shows that many more wooden houses were built in Amsterdam between 1230 and 1550 and that these still exist.
Het Houten Huys is one of the few wooden houses to have survived Amsterdam’s major city fires and later building regulations. Its wooden façade and historic location at the Begijnhof make it a well-known monument in the centre of Amsterdam.
The Sint Petrus House in Middelburg
Other publications identify KLM House No. 6 as the former Sint Petrus House in Middelburg. This late-Gothic wooden house is believed to have been built around 1530 and originally stood at the corner of Lange Delft and Lange Burg.
The building was damaged by fire during the nineteenth century. Its historic façade was preserved and later relocated. The surviving façade is now associated with the building at Achter het Hofplein 43 in Middelburg.
Two possible identifications
The façade of KLM House No. 6 has architectural features that have led to both identifications. The book Little Kingdom by the Sea identifies the house as being in Amsterdam, while Dutch Miniatures connects it to the Sint Petrus House in Middelburg.
Because both buildings are mentioned in recognised publications about the collection, it cannot be established with complete certainty which building originally served as the model for the miniature.
