KLM House No. 4 belongs to the first series of Delft Blue miniatures introduced by KLM in 1952. The miniature is commonly associated with the historic canal house at Keizersgracht 127 in Amsterdam.
Keizersgracht is one of Amsterdam’s best-known canals and forms part of the city’s seventeenth-century canal district. Many characteristic merchant houses line the canal, with narrow façades, tall windows and decorative gables.
KLM House No. 4 has the appearance of a traditional Amsterdam canal house. Its narrow shape and Delft Blue decoration make it a recognisable part of the early KLM collection.
Several collection lists identify Keizersgracht 127 as the address represented by KLM House No. 4. However, the façade of the miniature does not correspond exactly with the present building in every detail. It is therefore possible that the design was inspired by architectural elements from several Amsterdam canal houses.
