KLM House No. 5 is a Delft Blue miniature representing a traditional Dutch canal house. The miniature is associated with Amsterdam, although the exact building on which its design was based has not been identified with certainty.

A traditional Amsterdam canal house

The narrow façade, tall windows and characteristic gable resemble the historic buildings found along Amsterdam’s canals. Many canal houses of this type were built during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, when Amsterdam developed into an important centre of trade and shipping.

Because space in the city centre was limited, these houses were generally built narrow and tall. Behind the relatively small façade was often a deep building used as a residence, warehouse or a combination of living and commercial space.

The original building

The buildings represented by some of the earliest KLM houses have not been established with certainty. This is also the case with KLM House No. 5.

Although the design clearly resembles a historic Amsterdam canal house, the name, original address and year of construction are unknown. No unconfirmed building details are therefore included with this miniature.

Address of the original building

The original address is unknown.
