KLM House No. 2 is a miniature of the historic building at Spuistraat 294 in Amsterdam. The house was built in 1627 and is now part of the well-known Restaurant d’Vijff Vlieghen, also known as The Five Flies.

The historic building

Spuistraat was formerly known as the Nieuwezijds Achterburgwal. This Amsterdam canal was filled in during 1867 and subsequently became the street now known as Spuistraat.

The building at number 294 is distinguished by its narrow façade and stepped gable. Its construction year, 1627, can be seen in the wall anchors on the façade. A lion holding a coat of arms stands at the top of the building.

Restaurant d’Vijff Vlieghen

The building forms part of Restaurant d’Vijff Vlieghen, which occupies five adjoining seventeenth-century houses. The restaurant was founded in 1939 by Nicolaas Kroese, who combined food and drink with his interest in art and antiques.

Because of its historic rooms, distinctive interior and collection of old Dutch art, the restaurant is often described as a culinary museum. Over the years, it has welcomed many well-known international guests.
